We will go with you to your house to get your property only with a direct court order or in the event of family violence.

7. When is the next foreclosure sale?

County Attorney: Criminal Division

1. Can I speak with the county attorney's office about my case?

Texas state law prohibits any discussion of the case until the defendant has been admonished by the judge at the arraignment hearing. Once admonished by the judge, we can make a plea offer in your case, but we do not discuss facts or evidence.

2. If I hire an attorney or an attorney is appointed to me, can I speak with the county attorney's office?

If you hire an attorney or an attorney is appointed to you, we can only speak with your attorney, who will speak on your behalf.

3. How long does it take from the time of arrest until the case is filed?

Once our office receives the case, it is generally filed within a two-week time frame. Sometimes, it takes a little longer if we are waiting on additional information, the case is returned to the agency for corrections, or we are waiting on lab reports.

4. Can I have copies of the arrest report and video of my case?

The arrest report and video are evidence in the case against the defendant and are not available to the defendant. The attorney assigned to the case may request “discovery” (copy of complaint, information, offense report, lab report, and plea offer). The attorney may also view the video in our office or make a copy.

5. What if I am arrested on a felony charge along with a misdemeanor charge?

The misdemeanor case may be sent to the district attorney to be considered with the felony charge or prosecuted separately in the county court at law. District Attorney

7. What happens if I owe restitution for the crime?

Documentation of restitution owed is requested from our office. The judge, at his/her discretion, will order the defendant to pay the restitution to the victim. If the Crime Victims’ Compensation Program (CVCP) pays restitution to the victim, the defendant is ordered to reimburse the victim, who then reimburses the CVCP.

One must obtain a death certificate in the county in which the death occurred.

3. I'm an ex-wife and need a death certificate for social security reasons. Can I obtain one?

You can obtain a death certificate; however, you must present an appropriate notice from a government agency.

4. I work in a funeral home. Can I fax you the paperwork?

No. We can only work from original documents.

Development

1. I want to combine two lots into one lot or I want to divide one lot into two lots. How do I do this?

You must replat the lots in accordance with Section IV of the Hood County Development Regulations. This section explains the procedures you must follow and contains the necessary forms that must be submitted to the Development Office.

2. I want to open a business and build a building for it. What permits do I need?

You must submit a Site Development Permit Application to the Development Office in accordance with Section I of the Hood County Development Regulations. All the requirements for this permit are contained in this Section of the Regulations. However, if your location is in the Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) of a Hood County city then additional regulations imposed by that city may apply.

3. I want to build a house on my lot in the unincorporated area of Hood County. What permits do I need?

You will not need a Hood County Building Permit. However, you will need to obtain a Septic permit from the Hood County Environmental Health Department, a Road Access Permit from the Hood County Road Operations Department and a Water Well Permit from the Upper Trinity Water Conservation District (if needed). 

If any portion your property is located in a Special Flood Hazard Area, you may need a floodplain development permit from the Hood County Floodplain Administrator prior to any construction, or excavating.

4. I want to move a mobile home onto my property. What permits to I need?

You will need to obtain the same permits that are needed to build a house. These requirements are contained in Question No. 3.

5. When does the Hood County Development Commission meet and can I attend?

The Hood County Development Commission meets the 4th Wednesday of every month at 9:00 a.m. in the Hood County meeting room located in Hood County Annex #1, 1410 W. Pearl Street, Granbury, Texas 76048.

1. What types of payments do we accept?

Across the counter we take checks*, money orders, and cash.

*We do not accept checks for payment of felony court costs.

2. What is my felony court costs balance? Did you receive my payment?

You can search for your felony case through our Hood County District Clerk Portal. From there, you will be able to see the total assessments and the total payments and credits, as well as all payments made. To get your balance, you will have to deduct the total payments and credits from the total assessment figure.

3. How do I request copies of case paperwork? And how much are they?

If you are an attorney of record or pre-approved Attorney General employee, and have registered and requested access through our Hood County District Clerk Portal, you have access to copies on cases you are the attorney on. If neither of these apply, you may request copies in person or by mail. Please provide as much information as possible so we know which document(s) you are requesting (our Hood County District Clerk Portal website search may help). If you are sending a request by mail, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your payment. There is a $5.00 record search fee if the clerk must locate the cause number or ascertain the existence of a document in a file. Non-certified copies are $1.00/page. An additional per document charge of $5.00 is required to certify.

4. Where can I pay my taxes?

If a lawsuit has been filed against you for delinquent taxes, you may pay the court costs at the District Clerk's Office. Contact the District Clerk at 817-579-3236. To pay the balance of outstanding taxes, contact the Hood County Appraisal District at 817-573-2471.

5. Who do I call to discuss my upcoming jury duty?

If you are unable to make the date on your jury summons, we can reschedule if you haven't been rescheduled in the last 365 days. Contact the District Clerk's office for reschedule. If you can claim one of the exemptions or disqualifications on the back of your summons, fill in the form and return to the District Clerk office with a stamp. Check the District Clerk website for notifications of jury cancellations.

6. Where can I get forms to file my lawsuit or divorce?

The District Clerk's office cannot provide legal advice or forms. There is a link to 'Self Help' on the District Clerk website which is a resource for the 'pro-se' filer. In addition, local rules by joint agreement of the 355th Judicial District Court Judge and County Court at Law #1 Judge, dictate the attachment of the 'Family Standing Order' to every divorce and every suit affecting the parent-child relationship or modification thereof filed in these courts. 7. Who do I contact to schedule my court date(s)?

The District Clerk's office does not schedule court dates. These are set by the Court Administrators for the 355th Judicial District Court, County Court at Law No. 1 Court, and the Attorney General Court. Scheduled court hearing dates can be seen on the District Clerk Portal website for all courts except the Attorney General. 8. How do I gain access to a case 'sealed' by the judge?

If the Court seals a case, the District Clerk's office is prohibited by law to provide any information regarding it. We suggest you contact an attorney to access sealed records. Information on these types of cases can only be disclosed by court order.

9. I need a copy of my child support payments, where may I obtain the copy?

All payments are sent to the Texas State Disbursement Unit (SDU). You should contact the SDU website and request a copy. For custodial and noncustodial parent inquiries: TXSDU Call Center Phone: 1-800-252-8014. The District Clerks office is able to print a copy of the payments for you, but we are not able to certify the document.

We attempt to make every effort to let the public know a burn ban is in place. This is done by contacting local media, placing signs throughout the county, and using this website's emergency alerts system. 2. What items may I burn?

3. How do I obtain a copy of a fire report?

4. What do I need to conduct a burn?

5. When can I conduct a controlled burn?

You can conduct a controlled burn when no burn ban is in effect. Burning must be done no earlier than one hour after sunrise and no later than one hour before sunset. Burning can also only be done at a time when the wind speed is 6-26 miles per hour.

6. Do I need to get a permit for a controlled burn?

Hood County does not require permits to conduct controlled burns; however, within city limits, you must always check to see if your city requires permits. Hood County only requests that you complete the following form, so we are aware of the burn. Burn Notification Form

7. What are the penalties for violation of burning prohibited items?

The penalties for burning prohibited items range from a Class C Misdemeanor to a Class A Misdemeanor.

8. What is a burn ban?

A burn ban is when restrictions are placed on outdoor burning due to the conditions of the fuel. For more information about Hood County burn bans, please visit the following webpage. Controlled Burning

9. It rained, yet we are under a burn ban. Can I burn?

While periods of rain help to relieve conditions that create a burn ban, the fact that it has rained does not lift the ban. In accordance with Texas law, the ban is either on or off. Even though increased moisture and humidity help to reduce activity of fire, you must remember that unless vegetation is in the growing phase, the fuel still contains little to no moisture, contributing to increased fire danger. Our office monitors the conditions daily during the time burn bans are in place and can assure you they will be lifted when burning can be done safely.

10. What is the penalty for burning during a burn ban?

Violation of the burn ban may result in a fine of up to $500.

11. How do I take care of a citation I received for a violation?

If you received a citation, you should have also received a piece of paper informing you of the proper way to resolve the citation. If you have misplaced this, you can contact the justice of the peace for the precinct in which the citation was written. 12. I received an outdoor burn warning notice. Is this a citation?

An outdoor burn warning notice is not a citation. Typically, this is written as a way for the deputy to provide information in writing to the individual. These are kept on file and if future contact is made by a deputy, it provides supporting documentation that the individual has been advised of the requirements for conducting a controlled burn.

13. Are fire marshals police officers?

The fire marshal and all deputies are certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as peace officers. While the primary role of the fire marshal staff members is to investigate fires occurring within the county, their secondary role is to act as peace officers for Hood County.

14. I live within city limits. Who do I contact about burning?

Contact your city hall to find out if there are burning restrictions or a permitting process for your city. Hood County also requests that you complete the following form, so we are aware of the burn. Burn Notification Form

15. Who do I call for a fire inspection?

If you live in the county area, call (817) 579-3335 for a fire inspection. If you are in the City of Granbury, call (817) 573-1114.

16. When can I sell / buy fireworks?

The State of Texas establishes the dates for the sale of fireworks.
These dates are February 25 – March 2, April 16 – April 21, June 24 - July 4 and December 20 - January 1.

17. Where can I use fireworks?

Individual cities within Hood County have their own restrictions. In the county area, fireworks can be used on private property only. Public parks, church parking lots, and schools are not available for use to the public. Homeowners' associations may also have designated areas within a community for use of fireworks.

3. What do I need to get a library card?

5. What genealogy resources does the library have?

The library offers many different forms, such as divorce, power of attorney, will, and tax forms, which may be printed for 15 cents a page.

7. Do you offer WiFi?

Yes! Please see a staff member to obtain a code for our free WiFi.

8. What do I need to access WiFi or to use the public computers?

You will use your library card number to sign on to the public computers and to obtain a WiFi code. If you don't have a library card, you may show a staff member your driver's license or identification card to receive an access code.

9. Can I print from the computers at the library?

Yes. We ask that you pay 15 cents a page for printed items. We will then release the prints from the printer to you. Also, you may make copies on our copier for 15 cents a page.

10. Can I fax something to or from the library?

Yes! It costs $1.00 per page to send or receive a fax.

11. Are there any children's programs at the library?

Yes! We have many programs throughout the week. We also have a summer reading club program for all ages. For dates and times, please check our website. Hood County Library Website

12. What if I need an item, but the library doesn't have it?

The library offers an interlibrary loan program for all patrons in good standing with the library. If we do not have an item, you may put in a request to borrow the item from another library in Texas. New items may not be requested; however, you may recommend that the library purchase the item.

13. How long can I keep library materials?

Books and audio books may be checked out for two weeks. Movies may be checked out for one week. If you need additional time, you have the option to renew items if they are not currently on reserve for anyone else. Items may be renewed up to two times each.

14. Can I reserve items?

You may reserve an item either in person at the circulation desk or online via our website. Hood County Library Website

15. Does the library accept book donations?

We gladly accept donations. If we do not have the item, it is in great condition, and we are able to use it, we will add it to our collection. If it does not meet our needs, we will donate it to the Friends of the Hood County Library for their book sale. The Friends of the Hood County Library do not accept encyclopedias or reference books that are older than ten years old. No law books are needed.

You will need a completed Personal History Statement for all Sheriff Office/Law Enforcement/Fire Marshal positions, in addition to your application.

2. May I submit an application even if there isn't a current opening?

No. Hood County Personnel accepts applications only for currently open positions. All applications are kept on file for 2 years after submission.

3. May I bring my application directly to the office of the department I'm applying to?

No. All applications must be submitted to the Hood County H.R. Office, 1410 W Pearl Street, Granbury, Texas.

4. May I apply online?

Not at this time. You will need to download and print the applications and Personal History Statements and then fill them out. You may bring the completed forms to our office; fax them; or mail them to our address on Pearl Street.

3. Who is responsible for putting up our street signs?

If you are on a county-maintained road, we are responsible for the traffic signs. We will also put up 9-1-1 signs (street names) on county and public roads; however, we do not put up any signage on private roads. 4. Where is your office located, and when are you open?

5. I need to have a transition from the road to my driveway. What do I need to do?

The transition from the road to the driveway is called a driveway tie-in. If you live on a county-maintained road, complete the following form to leave us a service request for your driveway tie-in. Service Request Form

6. Can I get speed humps on my road?

Speed humps are not allowed on any county road.

7. People are speeding on my street. What can I do?

The Road Operations Department can check to see if the correct signage is in place. However, you will need to contact law enforcement to have those speed limits enforced.

8. How can I get rid of used brush?

The brush drop-off is handled by the Road Operations department. Please contact the office at 817-579-3304 for questions regarding hours of operation and acceptable materials.

9. How can I get rid of used oil?

The Citizen's Collection Station, which disposes of used oil, is handled through the Environmental Health Department. Contact the department at (817) 579-3288 for questions regarding hours of operation and acceptable materials.

10. I have a pothole in my street. Can you fix it?

Sheriff's Office

1. When to dial 9-1-1 - How to determine if it's an Emergency?

You can make a determination of a situation by asking yourself this question: Are the police, fire, or paramedic assistance needed right now to protect life or property? If yes, then immediately Dial 9-1-1 and advise the emergency service operator of what has or is about to happen.

2. How do I check on the status of my case after I have filed a report with a Deputy?

Depending on how large the incoming case load is, it takes approx. 1 week sometimes more before the C.I.D. Lt. receives your case to assign it to an Investigator. Therefore after a week you can call the C.I.D. Lt. @ 817-579-3318 and check on the status of your case. Criminal Investigations

3. Why has no one called to let me know the status of my case?

Due to the large case load not all cases are worked immediately when C.I.D. receives them. Therefore call the C.I.D. Lt. and check with him if you have questions. Criminal Investigations

4. Where can I get a copy of my offense report?

To receive a copy of your report you need to contact the records division at the Sheriff’s Office. After you have filled out and signed an Open Records Request you can obtain a copy of your report, if it meets the law requirements of release. Criminal Investigations

5. Are there times when my request for open records will be denied?

Yes, if the case is active status and being investigated then your request will be denied. Criminal Investigations

6. Is there a time limit requirement on reporting a missing person/s?

There is no certain time limit. If the person has been gone for an unreasonable amount of time, then you can report them as missing. This could be 5 minutes for a young child or up to a month for a responsible adult. Criminal Investigations

If you are a victim of a crime or if you are not sure please call 817-579-3307 and ask for a Patrol Deputy to come by your house or he/she can call you on the phone to answer your questions and/or help you file a report. 2. I am already receiving VA benefits but I need to change my address/direct deposit information.

To change your address or direct deposit information, complete a VA form 20-572. You may call this information in using the number on the form, mail it to the address provided, or we will fax it for you here at the Veterans Service Office. If you are changing your direct deposit to another bank, DO NOT close your old bank account until the first payment hits in your new bank account.

3. My father who is now deceased was a war time veteran. Does my mother qualify for benefits?

It depends on several things. If the veteran died of a service connected illness or injury, she can apply for Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC). If he did not have a service connected disability when he passed away, then she could be eligible for Death Pension based on her income, number of dependents and her status, meaning "Housebound" or in an Assisted Living or Nursing Facility. On the Veterans Services Home Page in 'Quick Links" Click on "Death Pension" for answers to questions related to this benefit.

4. I was in Vietnam and believe I may have been exposed to Agent Orange. Do I have any benefits?

Exposure to Agent Orange is not a disability, however there are diseases recognized to be presumptive due to exposure to Agent Orange. On the Veterans Services page in"quick links" select Agent Orange Presumptive Illnesses for more information and how to apply for disability compensation.

5. I am looking to buy a house and want a VA loan. How much will the VA loan me?

The VA doesn't loan money. It guarentees to the bank a percentage of your mortage if you default making it less risky for the bank to lend money to Veterans and encouraging them to do so. 6. I was in the Army for 3 years back in 1974. Where do I get a Veterans ID Card? Some stores offer discounts for veterans and they say I need an ID Card

If you are a veteran enrolled in the VA Heath Care System, you may be issued a VA Health Care Card. It is not a Veterans ID card per se; it just identifies that you can use the VA medical facilities. If you are have a service connected disability, it will say so on that card. The only veterans authorized a Military ID card are Military Retirees drawing retirement pay, disabled veterans rated 100 percent service connected, and their dependents. Your DD 214 identifies you as a veteran and store policy will govern what they will accept to qualify for a discount.

8. My grandfather passed away some years ago and served in WWII. I would like to get a copy of his military records for historic reasons. How do I do that?

9. My husband died 4 years ago from an illness that is now considered presumptive due to exposure to agent orange. I didn't know anything about this at the time and my husband never filed a claim.

You should file for Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC) on a VA form 21-534. If you have medical records and a copy of his death certificate that confirm his condition was the cause of his passing, you may be entitled to monthly compensation. You will also need to enclose with your claim a copy of your marriage certificate and his DD214. Call for an appointment with us as soon as you can.

10. My husband was in the military for 8 years before we were married. We divorced in 1987 and had no children together. He just passed away last year. Am I entitled to benefits?

No. You are not the suviving spouse.

11. I got out of the military in 1982 after serving 5 years. What education benefits do I have?

You had the old GI bill which expires after 10 years. If you didn't use it within 10 years of your discharge, then you loose those benefits. This is the reason we encourage newly discharged soldiers to enroll in school right away. The longer you are out of the military and working a civilian job, the least likely you are to go to school. On line classes offered by many colleges today make it easier now for working veterans to get a higher education and we encourage them to do that. If your initial enlistment was in Texas, look into the Hazelwood Act, a State program for Texas Veterans. We have information here at the office to help you.
