Nellie Gray Robertson was the first woman elected as a county attorney in Texas.  Nellie graduated from Granbury High School in 1912 and entered the University of Texas at Austin that fall.  She earned her law degree in 1918 and became one of a handful of female attorneys in Texas.

Nellie ran unopposed for Hood County Attorney in 1918.  At age twenty-four, she became the first woman ever elected as a county attorney in Texas -- a year before Texas ratified the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote.

Nellie served as the Hood County Attorney from 1918 – 1925.  She won two more terms as county attorney (1920 and 1924) and was appointed by the commissioner’s court to fill an unexpired term in 1923.

While serving as county attorney, Nellie also operated the Hood County Abstract Company.  Later, she wrote law books for Doubleday in New York and managed the Stewart Title Company in Beaumont, Texas.

In 1925, Nellie was the first woman appointed to sit as chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court.  Unfortunately, she was unable to serve because she was three months shy of having been licensed for the required seven years.  Hortense Ward took Nellie’s place as the first female chief justice.

Nellie retired from the practice of law in 1948.  She died in 1955 and is buried in the Granbury Cemetery.  Many of Nellie’s relatives still live in Hood County.

On June 20, 2015, Hood County dedicated a Texas historical marker for Nellie Gray Robertson.  The marker was installed on the grounds of the historic courthouse where Nellie once had her office.
